INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Corporate Sponsorships are available at a contribution of $750 as an “Eagle Sponsor” (you would receive a FULL page in the Wrestling Program, your ad/logo on our banner, AND website ad/link), $500 as a “Red Sponsor” (you would receive your logo on our banner AND website ad/link) and $250 as a “White Sponsor” (you would receive a logo on banner OR website ad/link. Also available is a “Tournament Sponsor” for a donation of $1,000. The Tournament Sponsor would receive a logo on the tournament t-shirt and a website ad/link. Finally, another form of donating is advertising your business by purchasing a page, half page or quarter page of our Wrestling Program. If you or your business is interested in being a sponsor of CVWBC, please see our Sponsorship Coordinator, Shelley Holley.

Mandatory Equipment:

• SINGLETS (provided) The singlets are on loan to you for as long as your child wrestles this season. You are responsible for the condition of your child’s singlet. All singlets are due in NO LATER than the team party. The only exception is the wrestlers who are advancing to the District tournament. Those are to be returned as soon as the child has completed the season. You will be notified by Terry Monn, our Equipment Manager if you have not turned in your child’s singlets. Please do not bleach or put the singlets into the dryer. This helps us make the singlets last for multiple seasons and reduces our costs. Upon return of your child’s singlet, you will receive your $20 deposit.

• Wrestling shoes. Please do not wear your wrestling shoes outside. These are not street shoes – wrestlers should put on their wrestling shoes once inside the building

• Headgear. Please put your wrestler’s name on their headgear.

Hygiene:

• Wrestlers are in very close contact with each other throughout practice. Excellent hygiene is a must. If your child has any contagious disease, please skip practice. Any open cuts should be well bandaged. Fingernails should be closely trimmed to prevent scratching. After practice, your wrestlers will be hot, tired and thirsty. Still, they should be showered as soon as returning home.

Practices:

• The wrestlers will be divided into three groups, Eagle, Red, and White.

• Parents are asked to respect the “Closed Room” policy. Parents may certainly stay in the building during the practice sessions but they are not permitted to enter the wrestling room.
V • No practice will be held if school is closed for a holiday, early dismissal, or inclement weather. Scrimmages and Tournaments:

• During the year, events will be scheduled with other teams. More information will follow regarding tournaments. Scrimmages with other clubs will also be scheduled. Wrestlers will be matched against each other according to age, weight, and experience. Although not mandatory, coaches strongly encourage participation because wrestlers can be matched according to their abilities. There is no cost to participate in these scrimmages.

• Tournaments are available for wrestlers year-round. The coaches have selected a number of local tournaments where they will make themselves available to assist the wrestlers. CVWBC has always viewed participation in tournaments as optional. The coaching staff views these tournaments as educational and a must for serious wrestlers. Tournaments involve much more than scrimmages for both parents and wrestlers. Wrestlers will be required to pay an entrance fee, typically $15.00 to $35.00. They will be required to weigh-in, and as long as the wrestler continues to win, be willing to spend the good part of a day at a tournament. Typically, awards are given to the top three or four place finishers in each weight class. More importantly, athletes get to test themselves against different levels of skill and experience involving kids their own age and weight. Tournament papers are handed out at practice, as they are available.

• A Novice Tournament will be held for 1st and 2nd year wrestlers on February 13th. This offers beginning wrestlers a unique opportunity to wrestle beginners from other clubs.

Fundraiser:

• Our tournaments are an important source of income for the club. We expect each parent to volunteer time, as they are able, to support the various tournaments that we sponsor throughout the year. This could include helping with set up before the tournament, clean up after or working in the concession stand or other areas where help is needed. It is our policy to schedule your volunteer time such that you do not miss any of your child’s matches. All parents of first and second year wrestlers are expected to help with the Novice Tournament.

• In addition to our tournaments, we will be hosting an “Eagle Challenge”. This is a letter writing campaign. Each wrestler will be expected to provide the Booster Club with ten (10) names and addresses to whom a sponser letter will be mailed.

Sportsmanship:

• Good sportsmanship is basic. Wrestling has several rituals that emphasize this. Wrestlers shake hands before and after each match. We expect that every wrestler, win or lose, will also cross the mat to shake the hand of their opponent’s coach. This is an expression of self-respect as well as respect for one’s opponent. Similarly, no “show boating”, intimidation, abusive language or defiance is acceptable. This holds true for wrestlers and their parents. Wrestler’s parents develop an important bonding and concern for each other’s wrestlers. Our children notice this and model it as well. Competition during practice can be intense. But remember, this is a learning experience and we’re all on the same team!

About wrestling:

• Wrestling is a contest between two young athletes. The purpose of the sport is to turn your opponent onto his back and hold his shoulders on the mat. This is called a “pin” or “fall” and when it happens, it terminates the match. As you will find, not every wrestler can “pin” his opponent, so in that event, points are awarded for technical achievements and whoever has the most points at the end of the match wins. The names for these scoring maneuvers are relatively easy to remember and understand:

• A fall or pin is awarded when a wrestler holds his opponent’s shoulders to the mat for a pre-determined length of time, usually two seconds. In a team tournament the team is awarded 6 points.

• A technical fall occurs whenever one wrestler’s score is 15 points greater than his opponent’s score. This also terminates the match and is worth 5 team points.

• A major decision does not end the match but if the victory is by 8 points or more, the team earns 4 points. Otherwise a victory is worth 3 team points.

• A near fall is almost a pin, but not quite. It occurs when you put your opponent on his back for two seconds or more, where he is in danger of being pinned. Two, three or four points may be awarded for a near fall.

• A takedown is a movement from the standing position where you take your opponent off his feet and gain control of him. This is worth 2 points.

• An escape means getting up and out from underneath your opponent when he was in control of you. This is worth 1 point.

• A reversal happens when the wrestler who was underneath his opponent reverses the position and gains control. This is worth 2 points.

• Penalty warnings, points or disqualifications are also possible.
